1998 Bowman’s Best

This break had a little bit of everything and the chrome cards still look terrific! Here is the breakdown:

1998 Bowman’s Best

Image

What’s inside: 24 packs with 6 cards per pack

What you can get: Refractors 1:20 ; Mirror Image 1:12 ; Bowman’s Best Performers 1:6 ; Autographs 1:180 and there are are Refractor and Atomic Refractor parallels of each insert set as well.

What I pulled

Notable rookies and prospects- Derek Lee, Magglio Ordonez, Aramis Ramirez, Kerry Wood, Carlos Lee, Paul Konerko, David Ortiz, Roy Halladay (2)

Image

Bowman’s Best Performers- Ben Grieve, Brad Fullmer, Aramis Ramirez, Russell Branyan

Image

Mirror Image- Jose Cruz Jr./Ruben Mateo, Ken Griffey Jr./Ben Grieve

Image

Refractor- Tim Salmon/400

Autograph- Ben Grieve (would have been a HUGE hit back in the day lol)

My Thoughts: This break was definitely well worth the cost of the box. I hit the auto which is 1:7.5 boxes so that was a pretty good pull. I got a nice variety and rookies and prospects of guys that are stars of today and the die cuts and refractor look really cool. Really hard to beat for the price.

Rating: 8/10

Well the breaks definitely got better as my personal ratings suggest. That was a lot of fun a certainly satisfied my itch to rip lol. I will be back soon with another break, I would love to hear what some of you would like to see me break. Also, all these cards are available for trade or sale if you need anything so feel free to contact me. Thanks for following!

1999 Upper Deck Series 1

This was a pretty interesting and fun break. Brought back some memories when I would buy packs of this at card shows. Here is the breakdown:

1999 Upper Deck Series 1

Image

What’s inside: 24 packs with 10 cards per pack.

What you can get: 10th Anniversary 1:4 ; Wonder Years 1:7 ; Immaculate Perception 1:23 and parallel versions of all those inserts. There are also Jersey autos to be found, 89 Griffey RC autos, and 500 HR club memorabilia.

What I pulled:

Notable Star Rookies- Troy Glaus, JD Drew, Carlos Guillen, Jeremy Giambi, Adrian Beltre

Image

10th Anniversary Team- Roberto Alomar, Ken Griffey Jr., Mark McGwire, Derek Jeter, Tom Glavine, Dennis Eckersley

Image

Wonder Years- Frank Thomas, Greg Maddux, Chipper Jones parallel/2000

Image

Immaculate Perception- Derek Jeter

and then I got something weird, on the bottom of the box I noticed there was a 1989 Upper Deck High Series pack and I had no idea they put those in the boxes. I am not sure if they are one per box or randomly inserted, but I thought it was cool anyway. I opened it of course hoping for the Griffey RC lol, didn’t get that but I did get the Randy Johnson RC!

My Thoughts: This was a fun rip, it was very cool to see a 1989 Upper Deck pack in the box with hopes of the Griffey rookie. The potential for high dollar cards is still in this product and they still hold value even now. I enjoyed getting the inserts of quality players and the Johnson RC was pretty sweet. I am sure I will be breaking this product again in the future.

KICKING OFF THE BREAKS!—1999 Topps Super Chrome!

Hey guys, I received the boxes today that I mentioned in my first post:

1999 Topps Super Chrome

1999 Upper Deck Series 1

1998 Bowman’s Best

I wanted to kick off this blog with a bang and bust all three of these boxes and post the results today so I am starting off with 1999 Topps Super Chrome:

Image

What’s inside: 12 packs with 3 jumbo Topps Chrome cards

What you can pull: Pretty much you get the full set of 36 cards plus 1 refractor card which have odds of 1:12 packs.

What I pulled: My refractor card was Mark McGwire which I thought was pretty cool! I was actually shorted card number #17 in the set and I think its because I got 2 McGwires, one being the refractor. The checklist can be found here: http://www.tradingcarddb.com/ViewAllSet.cfm/sid/1351

Here is a pic of the Mcgwire refractor:

My thoughts: This was a good start to the blog, fun little break and cool to see the oversized chrome cards and I enjoyed hitting Mark McGwire as my refractor.

On to busting 1999 Upper Deck Series 1!!

Starting up

Hey everyone, I have gotten into an older box break kick and thought it would be a cool idea to start a blog about the types of boxes I will be breaking and the results that come out of them. I wanted to break boxes I enjoyed breaking as a kid and sticking to years 1995-2000 with an occasional break that is older than that. I am hoping to break 1-2 boxes a month and posting the results here. I also want to stick with a rule that the box can’t be more than $60 as most of the boxes from that year range are cheaper than that. I think this will be a fun thing to do and gives a break from all the new stuff out nowadays where everyone is looking for “hits”. The main things I will be looking for out of the boxes I will be breaking are refractors and parallel cards with possibly an occasional game used or autograph if I get real lucky based on the odds from those years. I feel there is also still a lot of value in these boxes because if I happen to hit a Ken Griffey Jr. refractor type then if could potential pay for the whole box. I will be on the look out for the 3 main sports (baseball, football, and basketball) but the cheapest boxes in that date range are the baseball boxes. I might try to splurge a little bit once in a while and try my luck at a basketball box with the potential at a Jordan insert. So I urge you to follow my blog as I think this will be a lot of fun to see what comes out of these older products.

Here is the lineup I have so far with boxes I am waiting to get shipped to me:

1998 Bowman’s Best baseball

1999 Upper Deck Series 1 baseball

1999 Topps Super Chrome baseball

I will also be sticking to hobby boxes as those have the best odds for inserts. I can’t wait to get to ripping!
